Sweet Campfire Stick Bread

It's best to bake over even embers, not high flames – this prevents the stick bread from darkening too quickly on the outside.

Stir the baking powder in particularly well so the dough rises evenly later.

Very soft butter is easier to work in and makes the dough more supple.

If the dough is very sticky, add a tablespoon of flour at a time; if it's too firm, add a small splash of milk.

Shape with lightly floured hands so the dough sticks less.

Leave small gaps between the coils so the stick bread bakes more evenly.

If the outside is already brown but the inside still seems doughy, move it further back over the embers and cook more slowly while turning.

With very hot sticks, it helps to loosen the bread gently with a knife.
